We are investigating the support for activity awareness in the CiteSeer collaboratory. Activity awareness is awareness of collaborators’ work that supports performance in complex tasks in long-term endeavors directed at significant goals. Based on empirical studies, we give three examples of supporting activity awareness in collaboratories: (1) Awareness of collaborators’ creative activity in distributed settings; (2) Awareness of scholarly resources through notification systems; and (3) Awareness of intellectual trends as defined by the community. We conclude by discussing the importance of awareness as a long-term, sustained activity to enhance collaboration in scientific communities.
